Globally distributed work has been prevalent in organizations. However, cultural issues in distributed work are still challenging team performance. Cultural intelligence, defined as individuals? capability to perform in cross-cultural settings, has great potential in untangling these issues. The present study examines three individual capabilities (behavioral cultural intelligence, language proficiency and technical skills) and their effects on partners? receptivity-based trust and satisfaction in a cross-cultural virtual environment. We develop a theoretical model based on the extended adaptive structuration theory (EAST) and verify the model in a cross-border experiment. The result suggests that focal members? behavioral cultural intelligence strongly influences their remote partners? receptivity/trust. This effect is moderated by language proficiency; 57% of the variance of partners? satisfaction is predicted by receptivity/trust and the focal members? technical skills.

In recent years much research has been conducted examining the opportunities of using modern Web 2.0 applications in teaching. Today, wikis, forums, pod-casts or classical email communication are widely used media through which students can get in touch with their instructors or can discuss certain topics with each other. However, the usage of so-called many-to-one communication, where a number of persons transmit their messages to one recipient, has been considered only rarely. In this paper, we present AskEris ? an innovative many-to-one communication platform for higher education. It bases on previous investigations regarding various communication forms and their use in higher education. In this article, we describe its development and benefits. Finally, we provide insights into the evaluation of AskEris. Due to the positive results of this evaluation, AskEris was forwarded to the internal university computer center, which integrated AskEris into the university-wide document and communication platform.

Involving customers into the development process is a well-known best practice for creating successful products. The classical process of direct customer contact is time consuming and does not scale. In the past decade we have seen a tremendous growth in digitally available textual sources in the form of emails or web-based data such as communities and alike. These large collections of unstructured content are containing relevant customer input, however, humans can only deal with a limited amount of unstructured content in a given time. To address this problem, the concept of text mining has been established to help humans processing large amounts of unstructured content. In this paper we present first results of a design science research project. We have developed a text mining software artifact for extracting the voice of the customer from unstructured content with the goal of supporting the product development process. The artifact has been piloted and evaluated within a case study that we have carried out in cooperation with a large enterprise software company.

The industrialization of application software development is a key trend in the software industry. One important element of industrialized development processes is the introduction of a division of work with specialized competencies. Cross-functional integration is a fundamental and well established concept in product development. Its potential has also been recognized in application software development. Many enterprise application software vendors have established product management to complement software development from a business perspective, while R&D primarily focuses on technology aspects. Due to the growing significance of usability and user experience, the product design function has become increasingly important for application software development. However, there is little empirical work concerning cross-functional integration of product management and product design in application software development. The work presented in this paper explores success factors of this cross-functional integration.

Software product management has gained much attention in recent years for its positive influence on corporate success in software companies. However, despite its relevance and positive influence there is only little and vague guidance concerning software product management. There is no extensive body of knowledge as in Software Engineering or Project Management. The work presented in this paper aims at developing an adequate and precise conceptual representation of the software product management domain by means of creating a domain ontology. It defines domain-specific knowledge on a more fundamental level. The developed ontology captures basic aspects of the software product management domain and represents a reasonable approach to provide a common conceptual understanding of the domain.

Information assets of enterprises are vulnerable to theft and need to be protected to avoid information leakage to unauthorized parties. Technical countermeasures to protect confidential information fall to short, as information leaks can emerge from non-malicious behavior of users while they execute a business process in an Enterprise System. Our study investigates characteristics of security incidents in which users are authorized to access information in a secure domain, but cause information flow into an unsecure domain without any malicious objectives. We use a qualitative research method to explore the context, activities, and behaviors that lead to leakage of confidential information. We will collect empirical data in three sequential phases with interviews. In the first phase informants will be security consultants for Enterprise Systems, in the second phase company? s security managers will be interviewed and finally narratives are collected from end users. We employ the grounded theory approach to analyze the data and formulate the theoretical framework. The findings are expected to provide insights into the sources of confidential information leakage caused by non-malicious user behavior in Enterprise Systems.

Expanding procurement networks involving many countries, organizations and people impose challenges on procurement e-business systems. Firstly, the classic document ex- change based connection approach across company borderlines is still both time con- suming and costly. Secondly, today?s systems provide limited support for people net- working dimensions, combining structured and unstructured activities as part of the entire business process. We argue that the potential for accelerating the intra and inter firm procurement processes by addressing the challenges of integration and heteroge- neous activities is not sufficiently leveraged at present. In this paper, we present the re- sults of our design science research focusing on the evaluation of design principles along a software artifact, towards effects on procurement network performance.

The importance of product management in the software industry is widely recognized and has been empirically validated. Despite its importance, the maturity level of software product management in companies is still low and many companies struggle with the challenge of introducing product management. This paper describes an industry field report on a product management introduction project carried out in a banking & retail IT solutions company. We illustrate the initial situation as it was conceived prior to the product management introduction project, the approach pursued within the introduction project and the experience gathered during and after the project.

The success of any software company heavily depends on the quality and performance of its product management. Several researchers have focused on identifying and describing best-practice reference processes for software product management (SPM). Performance measurement is a pre-condition for process excellence. Therefore, it is crucial to establish an appropriate performance measurement for SPM. In this paper, we present our ongoing work with the goal of establishing performance measurement reference models for software product management.

Web services can be defined as loosely coupled, reusable software components that semantically encapsulate discrete functionality and are distributed and programmatically accessible over standard Internet protocols. Web services have received a lot of hype, the reasons for which are not easily determined. Some of their benefits might even seem to waste away, once we touch on the nitty-gritty details, because Web services per se do not offer a solution to underlying problems. The contributions included in this section delve into some of these issues, including: pitfalls of workflow issues; structuring procedural knowledge into problem-solving methods; discussing how a low initial entry barrier and simple technology are balanced against the long-term goal of easy integration; including semantics in a Web service modeling framework; and building on new kinds of applications such as grid enterprises.

Ontologging is an ontology-driven environment to enable next generation
knowledge management applications building on Semantic Web technology.
In this paper we first present the conceptual architecture underlying
Ontologging. Second, we focus on two important challenges for ontology-based
knowledge management, namely the supporting multiple ontologies and
managing ontology evolution. We will provide a general approach for
handling these two essential issues within the Ontologging architecture.
